This mysterious and creative work in E minor opens with all sections playing the melody in unison before transitioning to a fugue-like second half where the main theme is offset by one measure in violin 2, viola, and bass, creating interesting harmonies and tensions. Sudden dynamic shifts also add to the enigmatic atmosphere. Young players will have the opportunity to study fugue-style writing as well as reinforce low second fingers and dynamics. A very accessible piano part is optional but highly recommended.
