Composed in 1888 at the early age of 24, here is a cycle of six songs for voice and piano on poems by Adolf Friedrich von Schack. Each song is presented with German text in it's original key in the edition for high voice, but they are also made available for medium and low voice. The cycle includes: 1. Wozu noch, Machen, soll es frommen (Say, wherefore, vainly); 2. Breit uber mein Haupt dein schwarzes Haar (Droop o'er my head); 3. Schon sind, doch kalt die Himmelssterne (Glorious, but cold are the stars); Wie sollten wir geheim sie halten (Why should we seek to hid our passion); 5. Hoffen und wieder verzagen (Hoping, yet ever despairing); 6. Mein Herz ist stumm, mein Herz ist kalt! (My heart, so sad and silent now!)
