The first in a set of three French Canadian spiritual songs of the Nativity which date back to the medieval Mystery plays that still come to life at Christmas time in Quebec and France. The Noels Anciens are a form of popular literature, that depict, often in picturesque detail and without the least concern for authenticity, the customs of the times and events connected with the Nativity story. Patriquin's arrangement is a cappella, with the option to sing in English or French.
