Sellinger's Round was an immensely popular 16th century tune and round
dance most famously set by William Byrd in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book of
1610. Several modern English
composers collaborated to produce a set of string variations on it for the
coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
This vigorous version for brass quartet is based on the Fitzwilliam
setting by Byrd and makes an impressive show piece that will satisfy early
music brass enthusiasts. The weaving
and intricate contrapuntal lines are shared equally among all parts and make
this traditional Irish country dance tune a lot of fun to play. Scoring is for two trumpets, tenor trombone
(or horn in F) and bass trombone.
