In an attempt to address the growing need for early full orchestra music, I have composed "Engines of Fire." It can also be performed by string orchestra and later combined with any wind and percussion instruments which may be available.
Short and intense, the piece encourages assertive playing in all instruments. The harp part may be played on a pedal or lever harp, on piano, or not at all  its brief solo is included in cues for the strings.

This majestic Scottish tune was used extensively by Michael Nyman in his score to Jane Campion's 1993 film, "The Piano."  Here, the melody is brought more into its original context, a robust but deeply passionate ode to spring. Approx. 4 min.

Appropriate for second or third year string orchestras, Winter Music is full of the color and excitement of the season and is sure to become a holiday concert go-to. The piece features optional percussion and piano parts that enhance the already delightful colors.

It's no wonder that The Devil's Dream is a classic of the American fiddling cannon. Besides being a fun and relatively easy entry into fiddling and double-stops, it encourages students to have a relaxed bow hold and right arm, and its parallel fifths help reinforce fingerboard geography. It's marked Allegro molto, but any moderately quick tempo will do. The violins are in unison here so that your firsts and seconds get the same work-out, and even the violas and cellos get in on the fun (it may be useful to teach the melody in small blocks to all four sections at once and have them learn it in unison). Meanwhile, your bassists are also learning an essential style of bass playing; feel free to encourage them to slap on the rests as well. The piano part is optional but goes a long way to reinforce the harmonies and texture.

The Devil's Dream

In a Snowy Day was inspired by the experience of being stuck in a dense snow storm while on foot in Queens, New York. The title comes from the William Blake poem, Soft Snow. It was composed for and premiered by the Chelsea Symphony in 2013 and conducted by Reuben Blundell. Ideal for an advanced high school, university or community orchestra.

"L'istesso tempo" is an indication in music that usually means, "the same tempo," or "no change from the previous tempo." While it's common to see a piece named something like "Allegro," or "Larghetto" or "Vivacissimo," this one is usually not the first tempo indication of a piece, and therefore usually not the name of the piece. But to me, it can also mean, "we're all at the same pace."

The fun, short piece was premiered by the Midland Community Ensemble of Midland, Texas. Dr. Colby Swails, the artistic director of that ensemble, described it as, "...absurdly brilliant!...From Mozart to Maslanka!"

Muirdris, the Dragon of the Lake

Inspired by the Neo-Classicism of composers like Prokofiev and Stravinsky, "Melodrama" blends traditional sonata-allegro form with more contemporary musical idioms.  It's a lighthearted piece that conjures images of early melodramatic films with its wild and comic mood swings. The first theme of quiet freneticism is juxtaposed against an operatic, histrionic second theme.  Soon, the two are tossed back and forth perilously in the development section, only to dissolve ultimately into a calm, languid horn solo.  Premiered in New York City by The Chelsea Symphony, it's a suitable piece for a high school or university orchestra to play and always a good concert opener.

Melodrama

Variations on a German Folk Song (Fuchs du hast die Gans gestohlen) was orignally written for the composer's string orchestra students at the Brooklyn Music School. It has since been revised slightly to feature the harp more prominently, making it a beautiful feature for orchestras that have a harpist, though the piece may be performed without that part if so desired. The melody is better known as Song of the Wind to string players familiar with the Suzuki Method. Every instrument is given a prominent part. Additionally, since the first violin part is less challenging than the second violin part, it might serve as an excellent opportunity for second violins to take on the first violin part and lead the orchestra.

Variations on a German Folk Song

Inspired by Remedies Varo's painting, "La creacion de las aves," this piece is written in Classical sonata-allegro form with 12-tone serialism in a highly approachable and lyrical manner. It's appropriate for any advanced string ensemble.

The Creation of the Birds

A sad little waltz in the Italian style, this very easy piece for beginning string players makes use of basic finger patterns on the D and A strings. It's ideal for students who have been playing a year or less, and the piano part is easy enough for a non-pianist or a piano student to play.

Tristamente

Written during the composer's time living in the South Bronx on the Grand Concourse near Yankee Stadium, this five-movement piece is inspired by the borough and the complexity of life in New York City.  It starts with the quick Prelude which juxtaposes an intense, repetitive figure against a lyrical melody: a perfect analogy to New York life. This is followed by the Waltz in 5/4 time, recalling the waltzes of Tchaikovsky but with a decidedly American slant. The middle movement is the mysterious Interlude which eludes to an oddly quiet street corner in the dark of the very early morning, followed by the elegant but quirky Gavotte. The suite is rounded out by the Milonga, featuring a melody soaring over a vibrant and raucous accompaniment. Every section of the string orchestra is featured in this composition, and it's ideal for an advanced high school, university or community ensemble.

Bronx Suite

Ancient and mysterious, Gabriels Message first came into the
  English-speaking world via Sabine Baring-Gould, who had spent a winter in the
  Basque region of France as a boy.  He
  paraphrased the enchanting Birjina gazette bat zegoen which he encountered
  there, into the version we know as Gabriels Message.  But even this folk carol was a paraphrase
  of yet another versiona Latin tune known as Angelus Ad Verginem (The Angel
  to the Virgin).
    
    Like so many others, I instantly admired this tune when I first heard
  it.  I hope that this arrangement
  brings a musically sophisticated and satisfying experience to younger string and
  harp players.  All violins, violas,
  cellos and basses get to share the melody, and the violas take on a
  particularly attractive obbligato. 
  Meanwhile, the harp gets to join in on the drama with majestic chords
  and glissandi.  The part may be played
  on either a pedal or lever harp.

Nostalgia

Winter Music was composed for my students at Old Trail School.  I wanted to create something celebratory and colorful that would also honor their playing abilities and offer room for growth. Open stings are encouraged and are very much part of the asthetic.   The piece features the violas prominently with the melody as well as optional piano or harp and percussion parts. If the percussion parts are used--and I recommend it if possible--they may be divided between two or four players.

  Riccioli in 1651,
    
    and its found on the near side of the moon.
    
    My Mare Nubium attempts to capture the moments before sleep. The opening,
  alternating between G dominant 7th and E-flat major chords suggests the
  minds wandering. The middle section, poco piu animato, suggests a moment of
  agitation, perhaps reflecting on a misstep of the day or even frustration and
  not having fallen asleep yetboth very familiar experiences for me. The piece
  ends with a da capo restatement of the original idea as it finally rests into
  slumber.
    
    Mare Nubium is dedicated to developing bassists and to bassists everywhere.
  I sincerely hope it takes its place among the favorites in bass solo

  lilting rhythms help the developing bassist take full advantage of the
