Composed in the summer of 2016, Shine is a compelling and robust prelude for organ. Utilizing perpetual motion and a series of energetic ostinato patterns, this work explores some uncharted territory in comparison with standard organ repertoire. For example, the complex 6/16 + 5/16 time signature provides for a resilient groove with unrelenting energy, which is driven by a rapid sixteenth note accompaniment and shared between all staves, including the pedals. The frequent stop changes intended to transform the aural atmosphere also demonstrate a modern perspective on compositional technique, as well as showcase a virtuosic level of musical and logistical proficiency from the performer. A diverse harmonic vocabulary is utilized throughout the work and allows for a colorful combination of both horizontal and vertical complexity, which both reach their climactic potential in a vibrant E-flat major presentation of the secondary theme just before the work's powerful conclusion.
