Program Notes:
Sideways Chasm (2024) began as a musical experiment for me during my undergraduate composition studies, as my instructor Dr. Meyn encouraged me to expand my horizons by writing a piece for a solo wind instrument. As a violinist, this task proved to be unique for me, and eventually the clarinet was chosen given its wide range and versatility. The multi-movement work that followed seeks to explore the many different facets of the clarinet’s abilities, while also seeking to capture the contrasting feelings of emptiness and contentment present in the cycle of human nature.
