Sie liebten sich beide

Inspired by Clara Schumann's setting of Heinrich Heine's text in Sie liebten sich beide (Op. 13, No. 2), this modern original setting seeks to maintain the simplicity, structure, clarity and subtle harmonic language of Schumann's. The falling half-step gesture and phrase structures are preserved, as is the pattern of contrast between the first and second verses, and again the third and fourth verses. A short piano introduction and coda complete the piece.
