It would be difficult to find a more ideal holiday chart than this arrangement by Rich DeRosa. It begins with a powerful, jubilant fanfare that seamlessly melds into a fun calypso style. Interweaving melodic lines from two holiday favorites abound as the audience is taken on an ingenious musical journey with a brief visit to a half-time funk feel. Deck the Halls with Jingle Bells

Rich DeRosa once again provides us with his clever take on one of the most popular Christmas carols, Joy to the World. As arranged for the WDR Big Band, DeRosa sets this traditional tune in a zydeco feel that provides an entertaining journey from beginning to end. Focusing entirely on the ensemble, there is no improvisation in this chart. Rather, DeRosa builds and builds the ensemble through creative rhythms, harmonies, key changes, and grooves. This will be an absolute crowd favorite!

Joy to the World

Tom Molter has composed an exciting and compelling piece akin to the big-band charts inspired by the music of Pat Metheny. Apollo's Reel is set in a bright 3/4 feel with temporary shifts to a 4/4 swing feel. This modern piece will provide energy and depth to any concert!

Ever heard of Take the 'A' Train? Not like this you haven't! Another ingenious arrangement from the towering Rich DeRosa, this uptempo swing chart is a journey through creative waters from beginning to end and will not disappoint. In additional to incredible ensemble writing, there is improvisation space for piano and alto saxophone. As recorded by the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band on their album Lab 2013, DeRosa's arrangement of Take the 'A' Train is a must for any serious band.

Take the 'A' Train

James Miley presents a very hip arrangement of a great contemporary tune. Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun is masterfully scored for the modern big band, making great use of interesting saxophone effects, a wonderful rhythm section feel, neat rhythmic ideas, and very playable ensemble parts. The trumpet range is an optional written D. The melody is stated by tenor saxophone and trumpet with warm, dissonant backgrounds provided by the ensemble. The soloists can be as chosen for tenor saxophone, trumpet and/or trombone, making this very flexible for the strengths of your band.

Black Hole Sun

As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time by Basie, this wonderful, easy-swinging Mancini classic is cleverly set in 4/4 to accommodate the Basie band's iconic style. This is a terrific big band chart that belongs in every library right alongside I Can't Stop Loving You; Nice 'n Easy and I Left My Heart in San Francisco. There's space for a trumpet solo, and the ensemble writing is quite playable by most bands. So nice, and highly recommended!

Moon River

Here is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns throughout, although trumpets would work just fine. There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/flugel. Very nice!

Afternoon

Buddy Rich's band recorded this Beatles tune, and it is one of Holman's best-known charts. Treated as a jazz waltz, full of excitement and energy, it features solos for alto sax and trombone. Lots of raw power and blistering figures make this the ideal concert opener or closer!

Norwegian Wood

Every jazz fan knows it, loves it and has wished it was in print! And now, this quintessential big-band arrangement is finally available! As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time by Basie: Hits of the 50s 60s, Quincy Jones' arrangement of I Can't Stop Loving You will bring your audiences to their feet. Beginning with the Count's rubato piano tremolo, this laid-back shuffle chart features in-your-face ensemble writing at its finest. There is short, written-out solo space for trombone and piano, but mostly this chart simply swings its tail off with the entire ensemble from beginning to end! Never has a sad song sounded so happy! Very highly recommended!

I Can't Stop Loving You

Written with developing bands in mind, this fun, accessible chart can be performed as written or used as a tool to reinforce ear training and improvising. There is ample solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, and guitar, and it can be played with a swing or hip-hop feel. The reasonable brass ranges and flexibility of this chart make it a must-have for developing bands!

Ace of Hearts

As recorded by the Kenton band on the 7.5 on the Richter Scale album, this all-time great standard receives a fresh sound with impeccable scoring. This arrangement has it all: a solo piano introduction, a variety of feels – ballad, rubato, swing, 12/8 – and stunning ensemble passages. This chart is considered by many to be one of the finest big-band arrangements ever written – beautiful and highly recommended!

Body and Soul

One of the last original pieces composed by the late Fred Sturm, this may be one of the most beautiful. Sensitively arranged by David Springfield as a quiet ballad concert piece with no improvisation, Breathing  will serve well on any concert program as a quiet interlude that will showcase the gracefulness of your ensemble and delight those in your audience. Highly recommended!

Breathing

Pat Metheny is known for his beautiful melodies, and Back in Time is no exception. Featuring a flugelhorn or trumpet soloist throughout on a written-out solo with chords included for improvisation, this arrangement is very playable by the ensemble with its moderate ranges. Originally recorded on the reissued Secret Story CD, this arrangement is a great addition to Bob Curnow's continuing reflection on Metheny's music. Beautiful melody, beautiful chart!

Back in Time

There have been a lot of published charts on this great Ernie Wilkins arrangement, but this is the original version as played and recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra. Moten Swing is possibly the most played piece of music by the Basie band and has been recorded countless times, making it a must-have for any band's library as it exemplifies wonderful roaring ensemble passages with soft, soft sections which will make your band sparkle. This new Finale edition includes a transcribed piano solo throughout, detailed rhythm section parts which are written except during the solos, and clearer, cleaner, more complete parts. Additionally, there is solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet and piano.

This slow swing opens up with your bass player soloing (written or improved) for 12 bars before the band moves in with a cool, quiet, rich statement of the theme. Give your bass player a shot at this feature! Bass is featured throughout. Two different bass parts are included; one with a written solo throughout and one with just changes for the more mature player. Moderate ranges for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands.

Have Bass, Will Travel

This lush chart on Alone Together is a beautiful ensemble jazz ballad with a haunting melody and lots of interesting counterpoint and harmonies. Written with comfortable ranges and played at around 60 bpm, it has brief tenor sax and trombone solos. Great change-of-pace programming for any occasion!

Alone Together

As originally recorded by the great Charlie Mariano with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, this is a must-have ballad feature for alto saxophone. Let your alto player (or trumpet...parts provided for either) shine on this popular standard! Instrumentation: 5-5-5-4.

My Funny Valentine

As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time By Basie, this Quincy Jones chart is a laid-back, swingin' masterpiece. It's a wonderful, classic big band chart that belongs in every library right along side I Can't Stop Lovin' You and I Left My Heart in San Francisco. There is space for a trumpet solo, and the ensemble writing is quite playable by most bands. You can't go wrong with this exceptional chart on Nice 'n' Easy!

Nice 'n' Easy

Quincy Jones wrote some incredible arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count Basie Orchestra. As recorded on This Time By Basie, Quincy's arrangement of I Left My Heart in San Francisco features great interplay between the ensemble playing the melody, and the piano with written solo fills. With a tempo around 108 bpm, and a relaxed swing feel, there's also short solo space for tenor saxophone, and the ranges are very moderate. This chart is playable by a lot of bands. It's a true classic! Highly recommended!
