As an original Hakka pop song and the winner of 2019 Taiwan Music
Composition and Songwriting Contest, Silver Grass is a song about missing and
yearning, where Zoomie wishes to write a song her grandmother understands,
which is also the momentum of writing songs in her native tongue
(Hakka).
The first half of the lyrics depicts the grandmother seeing two black
drongos flying by in autumn and
thinking of her late husband and son. The second half artfully arranges two
Hakka folk rhymes related to black drongos, becoming catchy even for her
grandmother. As for the choral arrangement, the arranger replaced the guitar
accompaniment with vocal voices, and added piano to connect lyrical lines. In
addition, a transposition is made to higher register for better projection of
all voices. The arranger has managed to keep the carefree style of the
original song, while introducing more musical diversity.
