Built on modal melodic ideas with a nod to early 20th century composers such as Bartok and Hindemith, but adding rhythms taken from rock and Latin dance, each movement of this sonata is progressively more challenging than the last. The first movement, impetuous and energetic, is certainly within reach of an intermediate violist (and pianist), making it a great choice for a short recital performance. The second movement is elegiac, melancholy, and a little more challenging for both players. The third movement, quick and in 7/4 time, concludes the piece by incorporating themes from the previous two movements, and includes an optional improvisational "cadenza".
