Commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association, the Sonata in D Minor, Op. 27, contains Classical and Romantic elements. The first movement is in traditional sonata form with a very Romantic first theme and a restrained second theme which proceeds seamlessly into the development. The recapitulation leads to a rousing conclusion. The slower second movement is in arch form and is passionate and intensely lyrical. The finale, a set of variations on an original theme inspired by the Shakers, features a wide variety of styles and is virtuosic. The work was premiered on September 30, 2023, by violinist Sila Darville, to whom it is dedicated, with the composer at the piano, in Louisville, Kentucky.
