Sonatina #3 is built around the idea of Frames.
The First movement is Daffodils because of a framed painting of daffodil flowers by my Great Grandmother. I use a little motivic idea that is both rhythmically and musically saying 'daffodil' to create this movement. The flute part is very steady and the piano part adds a lot of contrast in harmony. It's different and I really like it. The flute part is a narrow range of low g to high g and the form is ABA.
The Second movement is the traditional Sonata Allegro form. Several years ago I composed some hymns to submit for a church hymnbook revision. I used the basic harmonies and some melodic elements of those hymns as the primary and secondary themes in this movement. The flute part flows in a remarkably narrow range from third space c up to high g and is set in the Key of E-flat. The piano part is FAST, so it needs a good player.
The Third movement incorporates glissandos and is all about the Body as a Frame. I used Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes as inspiration but it doesn't sound like it at all! The piano has fun rhythm in it. It's a fun, short movement also set in the Key of E-flat. The range is low f to high g.
Please listen to the recording and enjoy!
