"Nunc dimittis" is the Latin name for the "Canticle of Simeon." The text is based on the words of Simeon, who recognized the infant Jesus to be the Messiah at the Presentation of Jesus in the temple by Mary and Joseph. It had been revealed to Simeon by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah. This setting, for mixed choir and organ, moves between minor and major tonalities to establish a mood that is contemplative and reverent. It begins and ends with a treble solo and is best performed by more advanced artists. It is approximately 5 minutes long.
