Holst was one of the first composers in the twentieth century to write for the concert band. This piece is the third movement from his Second Suite for Band, written in 1911 and published in 1922. Like the other movements in the suite, it is based on a folk tune. The music is intricate with constantly changing meters and dotted rhythms, and contains the famous anvil part. This arrangement can use two percussionists for the anvil and cymbal, or one player playing both parts.
