Song of the Volga Boatman

This chart swings! It begins with a 2-beat feel and progresses to a full-blown 4/4 swing. The quiet beginning builds by adding layers and culminates with a written tom-tom solo. There's lots of excitement with this chart that also features a mysterious, minor tonality and kickin' rhythmic figures. Here's a fabulous arrangement of this traditional Russian folk song by arranger Mike Smukal that is very playable with no individual solos, just ensembles galore. The first trumpet only goes up to top line F. All the sections have some good lines plus the optional, non-jazz band parts make this one a must have. Highly recommended!
