Sonrise Prelude

Sonrise Prelude is a powerful and inspiring work based on the biblical story of the resurrection of the Son, featuring an original and sophisticated treatment of the classic hymn “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today.” The opening theme bursts forth in a spirit of celebration, followed by a more reflective passage that invites deeper contemplation before returning to a triumphant recapitulation. Rhythmic vitality flows throughout the piece with time signature changes in 4/4, 10/8, 6/4, and 7/8, giving it a distinctive sense of motion and energy. Originally composed in 2001 and premiered at the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, Sonrise Prelude can be performed as a string quartet, string quintet (with an optional double bass), or full string orchestra, offering ensembles of all sizes a moving musical experience that celebrates hope and renewal.
