Spectra

Spectra is a high-energy band work designed to give the ensemble the feeling of being part of a big band reminiscent of the blues giants of American jazz. Utilizing "blue notes" and free harmonic movement among modal collections, this work builds intensity to the final bar and is topped off with a percussion section designed to act as a driving rhythmic force akin to a thrilling drum set player. As a high school band director, I kept one thought in mind while composing this work: "What music would my kids be excited to rehearse and perform?" I focused on the energy that the band is capable of generating, while keeping the material fun! In short, Spectra shows that the concert band has all the colors available to make feet tap and heads nod.
