The first track on the legendary Miles Davis with big band album "Miles Ahead," this version utilizes the original manuscript score from that session. The improvised piano solo that was changed to trumpet for the recording has been restored. The piano solo was to have been played by Wynton Kelly. There is no way to get around the fact that Springsville is one of the most difficult pieces ever written for jazz orchestra. The composer did not envision the tune played this fast, but Evans' setting does not work at a slower tempo. There is no question that this chart is a true classic! Instrumentation: Solo trumpet/flugelhorn, alto saxophone, clarinet, 2 bass clarinets, 5 trumpets (plus the solo part), 2 horns in F, 4 trombones, tuba, piano, bass, and drums.
