Stamitz Viola Concerto in D Major

I immersed myself in the pedagogical works of Quantz and Turk, delving into their detailed treatises on performance practice and ornamentation. My research extended to the stylistic connections between Carl Stamitz and Wolfgang Mozart. Guided by Mozart's own cadenzas, I composed my own, striving to balance historical fidelity with personal expression. I studied his structural pacing, harmonic language, and rhetorical gestures ensuring my cadenzas remained stylistically coherent while allowing room for individuality. For the second movement, I incorporated tasteful embellishments, drawing upon Leopold Mozart's Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule (1756) and Philipp Karl Hoffmann's annotated embellishments of Mozart's piano concertos. My approach prioritized elegance and restraint, ensuring that ornaments enhanced rather than obscured the melodic line. In the third movement, I composed multiple lead-in options for each fermata. I carefully studied Stamitz's own cadenza for his basset horn concerto. According to Stamitz, each lead-in should be longer than the previous one. This process not only deepened my understanding of Classical performance practice but also reinforced the importance of informed creativity where scholarship and artistry intersect.
