Standhope Peak

Standhope Peak is a mountain next to my annual trail race, the Standhope Ultra Challenge. The views from the top are beyond spectacular. Getting there is not easy. The easiest route is from the Broad Mountain Trailhead, taking the broad mountain trail up to Baptie and Goat Lakes. The best time of year to climb it is summer, from July through September. The rest of the year, snow becomes an issue. Like an ascent of this mountain, this piece of music is not easy. Flashing woodwinds and fortissimo brass are characteristics of this work. The horn section has many prominent roles. Be careful of the balance with the countermelody at the opening theme. Many cues have been added to the other winds if you do not have a full oboe, bassoon, or horn section. It is the winner of the 2022 NFMC Armed Forces Composition Competition.
