Paced at around 174 bpm, State Line Strut is a swinger with a New Orleans second line groove. Commissioned by the Jazz Division of the Illinois Music Education Association for the 2017 All-State Jazz Ensemble, this well-conceived chart is a contrafact (a new melody written over existing chord changes) on the standard Back Home Again in Indiana. The features include call and response sectional interplay, a small ensemble of alto 1 and trumpets 1 and 2 presenting the head, swinging full band passages, quotes from Back Home Again in Indiana, written solo exchanges, and the rhythm section laying down the second line feel. Additionally, there is solo space for any saxophone, guitar, trumpet 2, or anyone. This one is hot!
