The idea for the work arose after hearing a beautiful work by Gordon Stout, which also utilized two flutes with percussion instruments. The three involved instruments do not necessarily function as a trio, but more of a duo, with the two flutes combining to achieve what is possible on just one marimba. The opening and closing sections are meant to be primarily groove-based and dissonant, while the middle section is more lyrical and nostalgic. Otherwise, the work carries no programmatic elements and is simply music for the sake of music.

"The force acting on an object is equal to the mass of that object times its acceleration (F = ma)," III. an action and reaction... "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." The melodic content in the piece is centered around a mixture of G harmonic minor and G dorian mode.
