This is one of two settings of beautiful African American spirituals for treble choir by Jonathan Hellerman. The melody is set with an appropriate simplicity that allows, and even encourages, the conductor to work on singing with choral unity and expression. The opening and closing refrains are a cappella - leaving the audience (and the singers) to enjoy the stark beauty of the words, the melody, and the choral sound. The harmony parts are built organically into the song, making them easy to learn even for beginners, but also very satisfying in their simplicity.
Written for Mr. Hellerman's middle school choir in Southern Maryland, this is one of his favorite pieces to conduct because of how it builds an connection and responsiveness between conductor and singers. It is a wonderful arrangement to introduce young (or older) singers to one of the most profound songs from the spiritual tradition.
