What an incredible combination of tunes for SATB choir, piano and piccolo! The tune and text of "The Cruel War" actually date back to the American Revolutionary War between the British and the Americans (1775 - 1783). The tune and text feature a common story-line of the day, that of "warrior" women who dressed up as men and followed their husbands and loved ones into battle. 

The piccolo part portrays a character all on its own in this arrangement. It features the tunes "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (a well-known American folk tune) and "the British Grenadiers" (a well-known British folk tune) interwined throughout. Both of these tunes also date back to the Revolutionary War. The piano part is supportive but not intrusive,
thinning out when the piccolo's military and contrapuntal melodies accompany the voices.

The "conversations" that occur musically between the young girl and the young soldier are intentionally interruptive in nature, as any lover's quarrel is want to be! Of course, at the end, when the depth of love for each other is expressed, the young man finally relents and both join harmoniously together.

    The words behind this well-known song carry significant historical
  significance. The piece is actually not just a "isn't that a lovely
  tune" folksong. The familiar main chorus "Speed bonny boat like a
  bird on the wing..." is repeated between the four verses which tell the
  story of the brutal battle of Culloden in Scotland and the end of the
  Highland way of life. 
    
    
    
    The accompanying violin and piano are characters in their own right and use
  word painting to highlight the emotional text. Scottish snare adds drama! The
  vocal writing uses different effects to ensure each verse has its own impact
  and expression. A verified crowd pleaser!

What could be more perfect for a junior level flautist than a bouncy and
  carefree tune that sounds right from the greens of Ireland!  "The Little Irish Girl" uses
  traditional contrasts between major and minor harmonies found in Irish folk
  song idioms.  The syncopations and
  dotted rhythms are easily played as they fall into the melody naturally.  The piano accompaniment highlights the
  delightful melody with its bagpipe style drones and grace notes.  A contrasting section where the flute and
  piano switch melodies teaches careful listening and ensemble skills.

  Christmas piece and wraps it up beautifully! 
  Sentimental but not sappy, simple but not simplistic and easily
  singable.  Two lyrical melodic sections
  (into AABAB coda) are shared between the parts supported by a stunning piano
  accompaniment featuring bell-like echoes and rich harmonies. Although
  essentially in 2-parts, additional parts are occasionally added for a richer
  texture. 
    
    
    
    The message of "Christmas Is..." is timeless - hope, joy, love
  and peace. 
    
    
    
    On a personal note, the images evoked by the text are memories of my own
  childhood in wintry Canada where Christmas was made magical not by things
  (because no one had much) but by kind friends, seasonal sights and sounds,
  and simply being and sharing together.

This stunningly beautiful and artistic arrangement of "She's Like
  the Swallow "contains the original, very old Newfoundland folk text very
  rarely used due to it's tragic story line. It is in the genre of "beware
  the uncaring man" common in folk songs of Europe which served to teach
  and warn young girls about the dangers of infatuation.  This genre travelled to the United States
  and Canada in the 1700's. The expression "apron low/apron high" is
  a common thread in this genre and refers to being pregnant.  
    
    
    
    "She's Like the Swallow" tells the tragic tale of a young girl
  who has fallen in love with a handsome but uncaring man.  The story is told from each character's
  perspective plus an observer (narrator). 
  The girl ultimately creates her own funeral bower of rose petals
  (ripping them off in desperation as she frantically runs through a garden),
  lies down on this 'bed of roses' and dies. 
  You have probably heard this song many times without ever knowing the
  true meaning due to significant verses left out.
    
    
    
    You will need a skilled accompanist! 
  The accompaniment utilizes significant word painting throughout to
  highlight the haunting melody line. Word painting depicts the swallow,
  uncaring cruelty, desperation, blindly going in circles, anger, church bells
  and fading away/dying.  
    
    
    
    The conductor is free to take liberties with the tempi and dynamics in
  order to create a unique interpretation that will resonate with their own
  choral group.
    
    
    
    This arrangement of "She's Like the Swallow "is an exceptional
  festival or competition piece and one that should be in the repertoire of
  every skilled women's choir!

NOT your usual folksong arrangement! This SATB version takes the original, much-loved tune and elevates it into an emotional and dramatic SATB masterpiece. It also utilizes the full, original text, which is rarely heard. Word painting, harmonic dissonances and a suspenseful, newly-composed coda work to convey the full emotional impact of the piece. This arrangement of "Early One Morning" is a fabulous addition to the choral repertoire.

Such a beautiful melody and this arrangement upholds the beauty of the melody so wonderfully.

Interlude is a delightful and refreshing junior/intermediate flute trio designed to give equal attention to all three parts. The trio creates contrasts of tonality (alternating major/minor areas) and articulation (legato phrases, short slurs and staccato passages) as well as imaginative melody sharing and contrapuntal styles. The range is comfortably within the ability expected for this level and in an easy key and time signature.
