Mousing Remix is a wildly inventive concert work that brings the irreverent energy of classic cartoon music into the concert hall — and it's unlike anything else in your programming catalog. 

Inspired by the genius of legendary film and cartoon composer Carl Stalling, this piece captures the madcap spirit of animated music while giving it a serious compositional makeover. Musical gestures are sliced, reshuffled, and recontextualized into a series of interrelated statements that keep audiences guessing — and grinning — from start to finish. Like the great cartoon composers before him, the composer weaves in parodies and references to classic orchestral works — but never quite lets you pin them down. That delicious sense of almost recognizing something is part of the fun, and audiences love it.

At the heart of the piece is the technique of Mickey Mousing, the one-to-one synchronization of music and physical gesture first heard in Disney's Steamboat Willie. Here, that technique becomes a compositional playground, giving the work a theatrical, visual energy that makes it as entertaining to watch as it is to hear.

Based on the choral theme from Chopin's Impromptu Op. 36, this theme and variations explores thematic, rhythmic, and gestural transformations from the impromptu, as well as echoes from other Chopin works, including the Preludes (Op. 24) and Scherzo No. 2 (Op.31). The work is dedicated to the memory of the composer's mother, who would practice the piano while she thought her kids were sleeping. The variations are meant to capture a nostalgia for youth, the love of family and of music, and a never-ending curiosity of what is possible.
