Duration: approx. 18 min.
This quartet—the first in a series of three— was driven by a desire to remain productive and positive during the quiet "slowdown" of the pandemic. These compositions are inherently melody-driven, reflecting the eclectic "melting pot" of New York City. The work features a blend of centuries-old harmonies, abrupt transitions, and diverse ethnic styles that mirror the vibrant humanity of the city. While the piece is rooted in traditional idioms, it is very much a product of our modern world.
-Movement Overview-
I. Moderato: The opening movement brings 19th-century classical structures into the 21st century, with melodies reminiscent of the lyrical depth found in Schubert and Beethoven.
II. Adagio: A romantic and melancholic "love song" that explores a more intimate, emotional landscape.
III. Allegro: This spirited finale opens with a Brahmsian folk dance. Listeners will soon discover why this piece has earned the nickname "The Meow Quartet" as a playful "kitty kat" motif emerges before segueing into a lively Irish-style gigue and returning to its energetic folk roots.
