Dvorak's String Quartet No. 10 was composed in 1879 at the request of Jean Becker. As the leader of the Florentine String Quartet, Becker was impressed with the composer's Slavonic Dances and requested a similar style. The Slavonic characteristics are best heard in the scherzo movement, which is written in the form of a Ukrainian Dumka, and the last movement, which emulates a Czech Skona.
