Sudden Changes is a work for wind band that explores the idea minimalist themes coupled with technically difficult rhythms and time signatures. It cycles through time signatures such as 5|8, 7|8, 9|8, 11|8, and 13|8. These time signatures were chosen to create a melodic line which changes and expands over time. The asymmetrical time subtly switches to a simple 4|4 time signature. Within this section the melodic components of the work are much more complex while the rhythms are simpler. The end of the work returns to the same compound time cycle as heard in the beginning. Notably, the melody found in the first section has now been mirrored around the central pitch giving the ending a familiar sound. This work captures contrasting ideas of chaos vs. calm, complex vs. simple, and beautiful vs. haunting. Each individual aspect in this piece is accented by the “sudden change” to its’ opposite aspect. I hope you enjoy Sudden Changes.
