"Premonition" is taken from Songs of a Sourdough, a book of poetry published in 1907 by Robert W. Service. In the United States, the book was published under the title The Spell of the Yukon and Other Verses.

The book is well known for its verse about the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon a decade earlier, particularly the long, humorous ballads, "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee."

"Kilmartin Glen" is a tone poem for orchestra based on the archeological pre-history and the recorded history of the people and the land near Kilmartin Argyll, Scotland. While the work is not specifically programmatic the music is evocative of certain historic events and individuals. The voices of the land and its people can be heard throughout the work in the use of characteristic percussion and authentic folk melodies.

O Holy Night

Rupert Brooke's The Soldier (1914) is one of only a handful of poems that exist by him. Brooke, born in 1887, died at the age of 27, but not after having established himself as a both a poet and an accomplished travel writer.

The Soldier is from his posthumously published collection entitled 1914 and Other Poems and is one of if not his best known work.

This setting of the work places it in a more personal vein and uses triadic, quartal, and quintal harmonies to capture the longing, and bittersweet nature of the text, as well as the peace and comfort one finds in the remembrance of one's home and homeland.

For the Fair and the Brave was written for the Tallahassee Winds and its director, Dr. Bentley Shellahamer for the 2004 Eric Whitacre Wind Festival and premiered on Sunday, July 11, 2004 at the Sydney Opera House, in Sydney, Australia. 
 
A fast and vigorous fanfare, For the Fair and the Brave should be played with a good degree of joyousness and jubilation. It utilizes the melodies of both the national anthems of the United States of America (The Star-Spangled Banner) and Australia (Advance, Australia Fair) and a driving, unabashed patriotism for both countries should also be present in is performance.

2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. Composer Ted Vives has skillfully and faithfully transcribed this monumental work for concert band, chorus, and soloists. A "tour de force" for advanced high school and college music departments, the is a "must perform" for any music program considering a commemorative concert.

Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125

Castrovalva is a work for a capella SSAATTBBB chorus. A challenging work for an advanced choral group, it is inspired by the MC Escher work of the same name. It depicts a storm approaching the Abruzzo village of Castrovalva, which lies at the top of a sheer slope. the text is in Italian and translates as:

There is hope!
As the clouds approach, like the rain, 
my soul mourns the loss through my tears. 
Yet, there is hope.

"elegy" is a very personal work and was written in memory of my first wife who passed away due to cancer in 1997. Anna loved the beach and we would sit for seemingly endless hourse watching the waves and the sea gulls as we walked along and collected shells. Her favorite place was Sanibel Island, just south of Ft. Myers, Fl.

Henry Van Dykes' poem, "A Parable of Immortality" seemed achingly appropriate to eulogize her as I have a picture of her walking on the beach framed with it as a keepsake.

I reworked the third movement of my "Children's Suite" for orchestra entitled "Elegy (Goodbye, friend)" into a four-part choral setting, and set it to the Van Dyke text.

Elegy

This dramatic excerpt from Richard Wagner's "Gotterdammerung" has achieved legendary status as a concert work. Ted Vives has created this new, extensively annotated transcription for band and given it new life for both the performers and audience. Vives has included Wagner's stage directions and narrative of the action, allowing the players to immerse themselves in the music-drama as a true participant in Wagner's presentation of Gesamtkunstwerk. This is a challenging transcription for better medium to advanced high school programs as well as community and college ensembles and is sure to give both performers and audience a full, Wagnerian experience.

Siegfried's Funeral Music

Composer Ted Vives has brilliantly scored Beethoven's monumental "Emperor" Concerto for concert band and soloist. This transcription captures all the heroic fervor of the original and fully lives up to its reputation as  Beethoven's greatest work for piano and orchestra. A perfect selection for a medium to advanced high school or college program that wants to feature a student or guest soloist. It's all here!

Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major - Op. 73 "Emperor"

In 1857, Wagner took a 12-year break during the composition of his music-drama "Siegfried" and in a letter to Otto Wesendonck wrote, "I have laid [Siegfried] under a linden tree." Forest Murmurs represents that exact point in time. Ted Vives has skillfully transcribed this orchestral excerpt for concert band, retaining all the richness and beauty of the setting. Beautiful solo passages for flute, oboe, and clarinet remain intact to feature your "star" players. A great concert or contest work for medium to advanced high school programs and well as college and community ensembles.

Forest Murmurs

Inspired by quotations of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Ted Vives has created an exciting driving and rhythmically adventuresome work that showcases both soloists as well as the entire percussion section in an extended feature.

What would happen if instead of a reindeer-drawn sleigh, Santa arrived on horseback and wearing a cowboy hat? Westward, Ho, Ho, Ho! answers this question with a "tip of the Stetson" to composer Don Gillis in a medley of several well-known Christmas tunes; "Up On the Housetop," "The Holly and the Ivy," "O, Tannenbaum," "Jolly Old St. Nicholas," and "Deck the Hall" all arranged in a to get your holiday spirits  out on the range. YEEHAW!!!!!

Westward, Ho, Ho, Ho!

"Lux Aeterna" is based on two sources, the first being the Latin "Requiem" Mass (Lux aeterna luceat eis Domine.) The second source is a book of travel writings by well-known American authors from the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, I was drawn to the writings of Ernest Ingersoll in a selection entitled "Colorado" where he describes his first view of the Rocky Mountains. In it he refers to them in extremely descriptive and appropriately "colorful" language. It seemed to me that Ingersoll's use of light imagery and the concept of eternal light were close cousins and when combined into a single idea produced a couplet with a dichotomy about two sides of beauty: the beauty that is both of this world and the beauty that awaits in the hereafter. The text was then set to a four-part choral arrangement of the first movement of my work for orchestra, "Introduction and Overture" which is likewise titled "The Climb" as it was inspired by my own travels throughout the Canadian Rockies and Alaska.
