The genesis for Symphonic Mountain Fantasy was the idea of writing a piece with a smaller reduced instrumentation but at a higher grade level. The result is a work that is derived mainly from a singular melody presented in the beginning, taking it to completely different places and tonalities throughout the entirety of the work. The melody rises and falls in ways that resemble mountainous terrain far in the distance, which is where the title originates from. This piece was chosen as the winner of the 2025 Association of Concert Bands/John Phillip Sousa Foundation Composition Contest. - Trenton Rhodes, 2025
