Giovanni Battista Sammartini was an Italian composer of fundamental importance in the development of the symphony and classical musical language. Born in Milan around 1700, he was a leading figure in the Italian musical scene of his time. Sammartini is particularly known for his contribution to the formation of the symphony. His works, characterized by a clear formal structure and thematic richness, anticipated many of the features that would become typical of the classical symphonic genre of Haydn and
Mozart. Sammartini was a highly respected and influential teacher. Among his most famous pupils is Christoph Willibald Gluck. His music was also appreciated by younger composers such as Johann Christian Bach. Sammartini's Symphony for Strings in D is presented in this edited educational edition with a realized continuo/harpsichord part that may beplayed on a electronic keyboard.
