Salieri’s Symphony in D major, often referred to as the "Venetian" Symphony, reflects the
bright, elegant style of late 18th-century Viennese classicism with a distinctly Italianate
flair.
In my string-only arrangement, the symphony takes on a more intimate and focused
character. Without the brass, the textures become leaner, allowing for nuanced phrasing,
and highlighting the intricate interplay between the string sections. The elegance and
vitality of Salieri’s writing remain fully intact, though the atmosphere shifts slightly—
from festive grandeur to refined chamber sophistication.
Movement I is bold and regal, with energetic rhythms and clear classical structure. In
this string arrangement, the dramatic fanfare-like themes are carried by the violins and
cellos, with inner voices (violas and second violins) supporting the harmonic motion. The
absence of Brass shifts the focus onto dynamic contrasts and articulation, enhancing the
symphonic drive through pure string sonority.
