This piece is the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, written in 1812. At its premiere in 1813, Beethoven remarked it was one of his best works. The second movement was so popular the audience demanded an encore. The piece is written in ternary form, or ABA. The A theme is in A minor and the B theme is in A major with a key signature change. Beethoven used some Bach-like Baroque counterpoint techniques similar to a fugue in this piece with the A theme being used as a counterpoint throughout the movement.
