Tango

Tango is an immediately engaging piece with the contrast in dynamics and in voicing. Tango sets the mood beginning with a full ensemble statement, and contrasts with fugue-like duets and trios. The syncopation will challenge even the most experienced musicians. One of my first works from college, this piece was inspired by the 1980 animated movie Return of the King, specifically the scene where the song "Where there's a whip, there's a way!" The song itself is not the inspiration; rather, the orcs marching. Originally, this piece was called "March of the Misfits." Eventually, it grew into a Tango feel, and thus the name change to Tango.
