The march is in a moderately-quick 6/8, with flexible instrumentation to meet the needs of the conductor and the students that are available.
Most rhythms are in the wind players are no shorter than an 8th note though there is a distinctive dotted 8th, 16th, 8th motive that recurs.
Timpani, snare, and bass drive the rhythm. At mm. 85 the backbeat accent switches from the snare to the timpani and bass drum. The timpani part is optional.
