This work began as an assignment in a Master's level music class. The challenge was to write a march in a minor key. Major key marches typically change to the subdominant key at the trio, but minor ones have no such tradition. So the decision was made to go from F minor to D minor. Why not?! Since this was already a rather large change, this makes the trio even more varied from the first two strains by changing the meter as well.
The title was selected from a set of submissions from students that had played or heard the piece. They were to submit a title that they thought was appropriate to the piece. The winning title was chosen by the composer.
