The Art of Darkness

This chart that won the composer the prestigious IAJE/Gil Evans Fellowship. It's a straight 8, cut-time, funk extravaganza with extended solo space for tenor, drums, guitar/piano, and trumpet. The piece moves from cut-time funk to open-ended Weather Report-ish solo sections, a drum feature supported by wildly angular unison rhythm lines, a laid-back guitar/piano solo for a bit of a breather, and finally concludes with an unexpected swing/metal romp to the end. Requires a sophisticated rhythm section, a strong guitarist with a love of melody and a knack for power chords, and advanced soloists all around. Alto Sax 1 doubles on Soprano.
