The Caliph - A Four-Episode Suite for Orchestra
The Caliph is a fantasy suite loosely inspired by a painting,
aAli-Ben-Hamet, Caliph of Constantinople and Chief of the Haractas,
Followed by his Escorta by the French painter, ThAodore ChassAriau.
Episode I: Fanfare and Entrance -
A magnificent caravan makes its way toward a palace deep in the Arabian
desert. We see camels, elephants, and
prancing Arabian horses. A fanfare sounds and the courtyard gates swing open.
The Caliph and his retinue enter the courtyard mounted upon prancing horses.
Now the Caliph, mounted upon his steed, is directly before you. Why is he
here?
Episode II: The Desert at Night: The scene shifts to the palace garden and
a small oasis. In the cool of the evening beneath the brilliant starlight,
the Caliph walks about admiring the peace and serenity of this isolated
oasis. He soon sees a beautiful woman. They speak and a mutual interest
sparks.
Episode III: Conflict and Battle - The purpose of the Caliph's visit is
revealed. Adversaries appear. Tension builds and a battle occurs. After the
battle, the Caliph remembers the mysterious woman and the peace of the oasis
garden.
Episode IV: Celebration Dance -
In the old desert town near the palace, a celebration takes place. The
crowd swirls through the streets of the bazaar. Acrobats and dervishes whirl
in a mad chaotic dance. The celebration builds to an exciting climax!
