The Temeraire, second of her name in the Royal Navy, was a 98-gun, 738 manned, ship of the line commissioned in 1788 and launched at Chatham in 1798. Enduring fame came from an unusual quarter when the painter J W M Turner produced an oil painting whose subject was The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838.' This can be found in London's National Gallery and was voted Britain's favourite painting in 2005. In this short work my aim was to depict the Temeraire at sea, not in war, perhaps undergoing sea trials where all the power and endurance of the mighty vessel was put to the test.
