The Firehouse was composed and dedicated to the Allentown Band, America's Oldest Civilian Band. Established in 1828, it is the premier community band in Allentown, PA. No fewer than 19 of the band's members were recruited by John Philip Sousa for his band. And one of his principal cornet soloists, Albertus Meyers, served as the conductor of the Allentown Band from 1926-1976. The band has had just 3 conductors in the past 99 years! Having performed at world-class concert halls like the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, the band has toured internationally numerous times and has released 32 albums of music in the concert band tradition.
The Firehouse is a spirited and difficult march, featuring the low winds in the tradition of the great circus march masters, Karl King and Henry Fillmore. The band's home inspires the name, a former fire station on Allentown's west side, with the 2-story firemen's brass pole still intact.
