I wrote this piece for the Sing Me a Story Foundation based on a poem by Raleah Truman, a 15-year-old girl who is hard of seeing and hearing. At the beginning of the piece, the ostinato sung by the tenors and basses are meant to represent a galloping horse while the sopranos and altos sing the melody, using the poem's words as the lyrics. As the poem progresses, it more deeply explores the speaker's relationship with the horse, their challenges, and their more complex emotions. Inspired by modern classical music and a new fascination with microtonality, I used many key changes and tempo changes to emphasize the poem's complex emotions before returning to the jolly gallop theme as the speaker reminisces about how she and the horse spend time with their friends and have fun. I end the piece on the most powerful line of the poem: "I deserve this."
