The Last of Sailing Ships follows the story of the final voyage of the Pamir, a barque built for the German shipping company F. Laeisz. On September 21st 1957, she sank of the coast of the Azores, leaving only six survivors behind.
By the mid-twentieth century, sailing ships had fallen out of favor to more modern coal and oil burning vessels. However, the Pamir continued her service as a container ship. In August of '57, her voyage from Buenos Aires was interrupted by Hurricane Carrie, a category 4 storm, which combined with faulty loading procedures, proved fatal for the ship.
Within the piece, frequent references are made to the naval hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save". This piece is dedicated to those lives lost in the Pamir tragedy.
