"The Lover's Tasks" is based on a folk tune I found in a book in the library - "Eighty English folk songs from the Southern Appalachians," by Cecil Sharp. Like many folk songs, "The Lover's Tasks" is one of many iterations of an idea, its most famous cousin being "Scarborough Fair." The text depicts a battle of wits, where two people are listing increasingly impossible tasks the other must complete before they agree to be their lover. The first person who can't come up with a new ridiculous ask is the one who must fold and accept the invitation. To accentuate that competition, a "telescoping" section is placed in the middle, where the Soprano/Alto and Tenor/Bass voices overlap, singing different verses.
