The composition behind the development of the popular Foxtrot dance craze was Handy’s 1912 “Memphis Blues”, subtitled “Mr Crump” for then Memphis Mayor Edward Crump’s election campaign. This was first identified as a “Southern Rag”, then a “Rag Two-Step”. James Reese Europe recorded this in 1914 and it turned out to be a huge hit and one of his bands' most popular songs. In the process this launched W.C. Handy’s career to a national audience. Handy had several subsequent hits that we know today. Sadly, having previously sold the rights to "Memphis Blues" for $50, he never received royalties for his first national hit song.
