For Double Bass and Soprano
Written for Confluss
the moon shows me my own form is centered in an excerpt from Schubert's Der Doppelganger and influenced
by the American Spiritualist movement. The work presents itself as a musical doppelganger of Schubert's
lieder, deconstructing and abstracting the text and melody into new figurations divorced from their original
context. The Spiritualist movement was active in the United States from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, and
is most notable for the practice of seances and spirit mediums. These practices allowed the primarily female
mediums to perform outside their societal roles, while at the same time having to constrain themselves in
these new roles. the moon shows me my own form explores this dichotomy by asking the performers to
physically restrain themselves or their instruments throughout the piece.
Sample Recording features Confluss (Sam Zagnit - Bass, Amber Evans - Soprano)
