This deeply moving, concert-length work follows the story of James Waxler, a soldier who fought for the Union cause during the American Civil War. The libretto, crafted by composer Thomas LaVoy, is based on Waxler's hand-written memoir, "Incidents of the War of the Rebellion"; a strikingly honest and compassionate account of the conflict, culminating in the brutal murder of a young slave girl at the hands of a fellow Union soldier. The work strategically incorporates the poetry of Walt Whitman and the music of black composers Sawney Freeman, Wallace and Minerva Willis, and Robert Nathaniel Dett to weave a tapestry of perspectives from before, during, and after the war. "The Witness" was conceived by Matthew Koller, the great-great-grandson of James Waxler, and was commissioned and premiered under his leadership in March 2026 by the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers.
