Three Part Songs

Josef Suk studied violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory, where he held a master class from 1922. Antonín Dvorák, who later became his father-in-law taught him there from 1891 and promoted him until his death. As a violinist Suk performed with the Bohemian Quartet for 40 years and travelled throughout Europe. For mixed choir in 1900 he composed the outstanding Tri zpevy op. 19, in each of which a female role (seductress/mother/witch) is hauntingly linked with the death motif. The present edition contains the original Czech lyrics and new singable English and German lyrics.
