The Renaissance period provides modern brass players with a treasure trove of early music. William Byrd was one the greatest composer of this period and wrote in many forms, including much polyphonic keyboard and consort music. His works from this repertoire work well for brass and this group of three dances is perfect for brass quartet. Consisting of the popular tune ‘Callino Casturame’, the famous ‘The Earle of Salisbury’ pavan, and a complimentary Galiarda, these three Byrd works capture the essence of early dance music. Catchy melodies, lush harmony, and abundant contrapuntal lines are featured throughout. Scored for two trumpets and two trombones (or euphoniums), a French horn substitute part for first trombone is also provided.
