The three settings of O Morning Star begin with the night of the nativity with staccato triads in the high register suggesting the twinkling of stars. The second verse has the character of a pastorale or musette as if to suggest the shepherds serenading the Lord. The third variation, an extroverted toccata, looks forward to the glory to come.
